Katharina Biely
Katharina is a sustainability transition researcher, with a strong interdisciplinary background and international working experience. She has an extensive list of publications and shared her insights at many international conferences. Katharina completed her Masters in the interdisciplinary study program International Development at the University of Vienna (Austria). During her studies she did one internship at an NGO in Switzerland, one internship at Alpe Adria University (Austria) and one internship at the Austrian Foundation for Development Research. After finishing her Masters with a comprehensive study of Environmental and Ecological Economics, she did her PhD at Hasselt University (Belgium). There, she studied the connection between market power and sustainability. Next to a theoretical exploration of the concept of power she did empirical research as part of a Horizon 2020 project (SUFISA), where she focused on sugar beet in Flanders. After completing her PhD, she worked as postdoc at Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) and Wageningen University (the Netherlands). At the former she explored the connection between human behavior and the energy transition. At the latter she worked on interdisciplinarity to accelerate the circular bioeconomy. At VITO, Katharina is working on just transformations with a focus on the energy transition. In this context, she is a co-founder and co-lead of the STRN Just Transition Thematic Group.
