Highlighted are potential Flona forests that were chosen by 226 scientists as a high priority for conservation at a conference in September 1999 (Instituto Socioambiental 1999). There are still 700,000 km2 of potential Flonas that could provide a matrix of working forests to link regions of protection and high biodiversity.
